Since We Fell
Since We Fell follows Rachel Childs, a former journalist who, after an on-air mental breakdown, now lives as a virtual shut-in. In all other respects, however, she enjoys an ideal life with an ideal husband. Until a chance encounter on a rainy afternoon causes that ideal life to fray. As does Rachel’s marriage. As does Rachel herself. Sucked into a conspiracy thick with deception, violence, and possibly madness, Rachel must find the strength within herself to conquer unimaginable fears and mind-altering truths. By turns heart- breaking, suspenseful, romantic, and sophisticated, Since We Fell is a novel of profound psychological insight and tension. It is Dennis Lehane at his very best.
How well do you know your spouse? What experiences prior to marriage have shaped you to live a secret life?
In this novel, you will follow Rachel Childs, the main character, from her childhood days through to adult life, her career and her marriages. The first half of this book was all about Rachel and her parents, as she is trying to solve some unanswered questions after her mother dies, while becoming a successful reporter, struggling with the reality of some of the stories she has to cover. Left with anxiety attacks in front of the camera and in her daily life, she by chance encounters and old acquaintance one night, that led to more and ever more, as the story climaxes to “Since We Fell”, the whole reason we are actually reading this novel.
This was the first Dennis Lehane novel I have read and I enjoyed his writing style right from the beginning. Easy and contemporary I was able to breeze through it effortlessly. However, the story felt slow moving mainly for the first half of the book. Personally, I don’t enjoy family drama or sad backstories that go on and on that long. But after that was all established, the story took a different shape and romance made it sweet and comfortable…..until….I’ll quote from the book cover,” Sucked into a conspiracy thick with deception, violence, and possibly madness, Rachel must find the strength within herself to conquer unimaginable fears and mind-altering truths”. Ta dah!!! So, who took the bullet?
