My Review

This workbook takes the word ‘boring’ out of the equation and is packed with a variety of activities children can easily relate to. Aiming to inspire the creativity of young writers in the making, it is nothing short of engaging even for the most reluctant of novices. Some of the key components covered are character, description, viewpoint, and dialogue with helpful chapter introductions the lead to thinking and creating.

With the right balance of informational bites introduced and the layout of inviting graphics, each chapter is organized with a lesson, and activities to practice.

Creating characters from silly to serious, students are given synonym examples to expand vocabulary and description words while keeping the senses in mind. This same principle is applied throughout the activity book in different sections addressing anything from scenes to settings.

The activities also make use of the student’s senses, allowing places to draw in parts of their stories. Learning to “show” with words rather than “tell” what is happening builds on that principle using the senses. This, I thought, was a great way to lead a young writer into creating more vividly and varied using memory and recall.

There are plenty of pages for practice. Creating scenes, dialogue, poetry, emails, and comics. There is such a variety in bite-sized fun activities, by application, it allows a wide range in change and pace so there is no room to harbor any boredom.

Who wouldn’t want to write about a fluff under their bed?

From building your story: Beginning - Build up - Problem - Solution - Ending to creating more challenging stories with structure and style, the concept of the roller coaster is a fun way to let young writers learn to create arcs and low points in their stories. It also inspires to pay more attention to those details in books the children read or listen too, which will build an understanding and recognition of certain patterns. In turn, the things learned in the activities will become a writer’s tool to be applied.

Filled with many writing prompts and exercises it is a great activity book use at home for extra practice or in a homeschool setting along with other materials. There is always room to expand of course, but as it is, these activities are fantastic and the overall mesh of engaging chapter intros, graphics and prompts are very inviting.

To me, the author’s joy in creating this book and working with children shines through the pages. It is simply lovely and informative, a gentle introduction to creative writing I’d recommend.

I received a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

All opinions are my own. Thank you!
