Description:

In a land where three suns almost never set, a fledgling killer joins a school of assassins, seeking vengeance against the powers who destroyed her family.

Daughter of an executed traitor, Mia Corvere is barely able to escape her father’s failed rebellion with her life. Alone and friendless, she hides in a city built from the bones of a dead god, hunted by the Senate and her father’s former comrades. But her gift for speaking with the shadows leads her to the door of a retired killer, and a future she never imagined.

Now, Mia is apprenticed to the deadliest flock of assassins in the entire Republic—the Red Church. If she bests her fellow students in contests of steel, poison and the subtle arts, she’ll be inducted among the Blades of the Lady of Blessed Murder, and one step closer to the vengeance she desires. But a killer is loose within the Church’s halls, the bloody secrets of Mia’s past return to haunt her, and a plot to bring down the entire congregation is unfolding in the shadows she so loves.

Will she even survive to initiation, let alone have her revenge?

My review:

Welcome to the Red Church in Nevernight, the Hogwarts 2.0 upgraded edition for the badest assassins to be.

Mia Corvere, the young female heroine in this epic story, goes on a quest to avenge the execution of her father and the imprisonment of her mother and younger brother. At the tender age of only 10 years old, she meets Mercurio, a merciful man, that takes her in and gets her started on some training to prepare her for the Red Church. By the time she is on her way to the toughest assassin training in Nevernight, she meets a boy named Tric. Now aged 14, they are both entering the school at which the students are put through the toughest, most gruesome trials of fighting and killing. Along the way you will follow Mia and Tric and the many friends and foes they make. The question is, will Mia’s need for revenge be enough to withstand the trials till the end?

In contrast to all the blood that is shed, there are balls to be held in beautiful halls, tender or funny moments with different characters you meet, and steamy hot bursts of steamy romance that ensue, driven by (what I would think) all that adrenaline to stay alive and find humanity in one another. Either way, the stark opposites of silk and leather, love and hate, battlegrounds and beautiful halls, violence and tenderness just kept on going. I cannot believe how much was packed into that book.

If you are interested in reading a non-stop action packed, bad a.. heroine novel, then this will be the one. I have nothing negative to say about this book except that for my personal reading taste, there was almost too much action. The book is great, the writing is great, but I feel like I just ran a marathon if you know what I mean. However, I was so pleasantly surprised by this novel, being a newbie in this genre, I would highly recommend this read to anyone on a quest for an epic novel. Enjoy 😊
